Your Apple ID is greyed out in settings and you’re not sure why. When you open the Settings app on your iPhone, your Apple ID shows up as greyed out, making it inaccessible. And when the Apple ID is tapped, nothing happens because the setting is disabled. Sometimes A greyed out Apple ID may appear to be stuck on ‘Verifying’. In this article, I’ll show you what to do when your Apple ID is greyed out in settings!
What To Do When Your Apple ID is Greyed Out in Settings
There could be various reasons an Apple ID is greyed out on an iPhone, including an iOS bug. You may not be able to figure out the exact cause, so we recommend trying the following troubleshooting steps until the problem is resolved.
1. Restart
Restarting your iPhone is the first thing to try when your Apple ID is Greyed out in settings. Your iPhone may just be experiencing a minor software glitch!
Press and hold the power button until slide to power off appears if you have an iPhone 8 or older model iPhone. If you have an iPhone X or newer, simultaneously press and hold the side button and either volume button until slide to power off appears.
In either case, drag the red power icon from left to right to shut down your iPhone. Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the power button or the side button again until the Apple logo appears on the center of the screen to turn your iPhone back on.
2. Check if restrictions are turned on on your iPhone
It is possible you’ve turned on restrictions on your iPhone. Make sure that the ability to make changes to accounts is allowed. Here is how you can check this:
- Go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on, scroll down to the Allow Changes section.
- Tap Account Changes, and set it to Allow. If asked, enter your Screen Time passcode.
If this does not solve your issue, try turning off Screen Time.
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Scroll all the way down and tap Turn Off Screen Time. You’ll be prompted to enter your Screen Time Passcode if you’ve set one up.
- Tap Turn Off Screen Time to confirm your decision.
3. Update Your iPhone
It’s possible your Apple ID is Greyed out in settings because of an iOS bug. Updating your iPhone might fix your issue. Go to Settings -> General -> Software Update and check to see if an iOS update is available. Tap Download and Install or Update Now if an iOS update is available on your iPhone!
4. Check Apple system status page
Sometimes you’ll experience Apple ID problems on your iPhone when Apple Servers are down. Apple may be doing routine maintenance, or their servers may be experiencing heavy traffic.
Check out Apple’s Server Status page and make sure there’s a green dot next to Apple ID. If the dot next to Apple ID isn’t green, you’re not the only one experiencing problems with your Apple ID!
When the servers are down, there’s only one thing you can do — be patient! They’ll be up again in no time.
5. Check Whether Your iPhone Is Supervised
If your iPhone is supervised, there is a good chance that your Apple ID is going to be greyed out. This means that your Apple ID is not deactivated. It just means that you do not have access to it.
On your iPhone, go to Settings -> General -> Profiles, do you see any profile installed? if there is, you can tap it to see what restrictions are set.
You can try to talk to whoever is supervising your iPhone (usually the organization you work for) and ask them to remove it. However, if you installed configuration profiles on your own, follow the steps below to delete them:
- Go to Settings -> General -> Profiles.
- Tap the profile name
- Tap Remove Profile or Delete Profile.
6. Contact Apple Support
Some Apple ID issues are extremely complex and can only be resolved by an Apple employee. Head to Apple’s support page and click iPhone -> Apple ID & iCloud, where you’ll have the option to set up a call with an Apple employee. You can also set up an appointment at your local Apple Store and have a Genius or tech take a look at it!
