iPhone 11 No Sound on Calls? Here’s How to Fix The Problem

Last Updated: November 1, 2022 by Moses Gitari

You make a call and it connects. But you can’t hear the person on the other end, or they can’t hear you. What can you do? In this article, i’ll explain why there is no sound in calls on iPhone 11 and show you how to fix the problem.

How To Fix No Sound In Calls On iPhone 11

If your iPhone 11 has no sound during calls, follow The steps below to fix the issue.

Note: information in this article applies to iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

1. Turn Up The Call Volume

If you are facing the problem of no sound in calls on iPhone 11, try turning up the call volume on your phone, or if the caller is having trouble hearing you, suggest they do the same.

During a voice call, press the volume up button located on the left side of your device to maximise the Call volume.

If you still can’t hear anything, please try to talk through loudspeakers during phone call. If the sound is still unclear, that could be a network issue. Please proceed to the next step.

2. Check Your Service

When you are located in a no-signal zone, you might hear noises during phone calls. Make sure to use your phone in an area within your operator’s network coverage to fix the no sound in calls on iPhone 11.

3. Disable Bluetooth

When you connect your iPhone to a Bluetooth audio device, the sound is played via the Bluetooth device. So if the earpiece of your iPhone 11 is not able to deliver sound, disable Bluetooth so that sound comes out of the ear speaker of your iPhone. To do that, head to Settings > Bluetooth.

4. Make Sure Nothing Is Blocking The Receiver

If you are still experiencing the problem of no sound during calls on iPhone 11, make sure the receiver is not blocked by the protective case of film.

Another thing you should do without fail is to ensure that smudge or tiny particles of gunk are not blocking the receiver. Believe it or not, dust does sneak into the receiver grill and start creating problems.

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, you can scrub the receiver grill. Besides, canned air can also be handy in blowing debris out of the receiver’s nooks and crannies.

5. Clean Out The Lightning Port

the dust and grime can clog the lightning port which can “trick” your iPhone into thinking headphones are plugged in.

Carefully inspect the Lightning port for signs of gunk using the flashlight. You will probably see buildup on the contacts at the very end, but also in the grooves that run along each side of the port.

Grab your toothpick, SIM ejector tool, or other thin object. Insert it into the Lightning port and scrape as much grime out as you can. It’s best to scrape the port, wipe down the toothpick or SIM ejector tool, then scrape again.

6. Restart Your iPhone

If the problem of no sound during calls on iPhone 11 is due to a software glitch, which can happen from time to time, you might be able to fix it by simply turning your device off and on again. Go to Settings > General > Shut Down. Drag the power off slider to turn off your device. Wait for a minute and restart your iPhone.

If the issue persists, please proceed to the next step.

7. Update your iPhone

If your iPhone 11 still doesn’t play sound during calls, try updating the software. If the no sound on calls issue is due to a bug, the software update will most probably fix it on your iPhone 11. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

8. Reset Network Settings

If the issue still persists, please reset your network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Resend iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

9. Connect a headset and see if sound works

If you can’t hear anything with the built-in speakers after trying all of the above steps, but are able to hear sounds via the headset when a headset is connected, there could be a problem with your built-in speaker(s).

If you believe an issue is tied to the built-in speakers, then you will most likely have to visit an Apple Store to have your speaker serviced. If the device is under warranty, it should be replaced for free. Otherwise, you may be facing a bench and labor charge.

10. Look for Sound Settings in Third-Party Apps

Several third-party apps provide fully customizable sound settings. So if you are not able to get the sound from your iPhone 11 when using a third-party app, head into the app settings to adjust the volume and mute sound settings. If the problem continues, update the app (App Store > your profile > Available updates). If the no sound issue persists even after you have updated the apps, delete and reinstall it on your iPhone 11.

if sound is not working during a FaceTime call, check that you haven’t muted your microphone. It’s quite probable that the person you’re speaking with has accidentally muted their microphone (by inadvertently tapping on the microphone icon). To rectify this issue, ask them to check and tap their microphone icon. If it has been muted, the icon will be white (rather than grey).

Also, if the person you’re speaking with is complaining that they can’t hear you, you should check that you haven’t muted your own microphone.

11. Force Restart Your iPhone

Considering how reliable force restart has always been when it comes to fixing common iPhone problems, it wouldn’t be wise to miss out on this one. To do it, press and quickly release the volume up button. Then, press and quickly release the volume down button. After that, hold down the side button until the screen goes black and the Apple logo pops up on the screen.

12. Reset All Settings

Times when I run into a persistent issue that I can’t seem to resolve by simple hacks, I decided to go ahead and reset all settings. On several occasions, it doesn’t disappoint me. Based on my experience, I would suggest you give it a try as well.

In iOS 14 or earlier: Head over to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
In iOS 15 or later: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Reset All Settings

13. Contact Apple Support

If all else fails, contact Apple Support to figure out the problem. Hopefully, you will be able to fix the no sound in calls on iPhone 11.
