How to fix iPhone 12 Pro overheating issues

Last Updated: August 1, 2021 by Dave Johnson

Is your iPhone 12 Pro overheating? Here’s why your iPhone 12 Pro gets hot, how to cool it down, and keep it from heating up again.

Your iPhone 12 Pro could get hot from charging your phone while using streaming or gaming apps, leaving your phone out in direct sunlight, or leaving it in a case that traps heat.

iPhone 12 Pro tends to get warm in routine use, and that’s not unusual or problematic unless you’re doing a handful of things.
If your iPhone 12 Pro gets excessively hot too hot to touch or uncomfortable to hold then you should take precautions to cool it off and keep it from overheating in the future.

Your iPhone 12 Pro is a sophisticated computer, and all computers generate heat while they’re running. But while your desktop PC and laptop have fans to help manage heat, your iPhone doesn’t. That means it tends to get warm when in use.

A warm iPhone isn’t unusual and is rarely, if ever, a problem. Still, if you find that your iPhone 12 Pro gets uncomfortably or alarmingly hot, you should take some steps to cool it off and prevent it from getting so hot in the future. It should be obvious when your iPhone is too hot. It will not be warm, but difficult to hold and even painfully hot to the touch.

If your iPhone 12 Pro gets excessively hot, you should make an effort to cool it off immediately. Here are some standard precautions and troubleshooting steps you can take:

Lower iPhone Brightness

If your screen brightness is above 50 percent or so, your iPhone 12 Pro has a greater chance of staying warm all the time. You should reduce this to ydecrease heat.

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to bring up Control Center. Then drag the slider with the sun icon to decrease the brightness.

Take off the case

Some phone cases are more likely to trap heat than others. So if your iPhone 12 Pro is extremely hot, remove the case so the heat can more easily radiate away.

Avoid leaving your iPhone in a car

Often, an iPhone 12 Pro overheats when it’s in a hot car with the sun beating down on it directly through the windshield. If possible, move it into a shady part of the vehicle. But don’t put it in your pocket or a heavy bag that will trap the heat and not let it radiate away.

Avoid exposing your iPhone to direct sunlight

You may need to avoid direct sunlight entirely if you’re somewhere extremely hot. If you’re on holiday somewhere fiercely sunny, keep the iPhone in a bag or in the shade. Refrain from using the phone if possible.

Stop performing processor-intensive tasks

This means you should close your streaming video apps and stop playing mobile games. For example, if your iPhone got noticeably hot while watching Netflix, stop the streaming app to take the load off the processor.

Stop charging your iPhone while you perform processor-intensive tasks

Charging your phone heats the battery. Playing games heats up the CPU and other components. Combining the two can lead to an unexpectedly hot iPhone 12 Pro.

Stop using Bluetooth

Stop using Bluetooth, because it provides an additional source of heat. You can do this from the Control Centre: swipe down from the top right of the screen and tap the Bluetooth icon.

Turn off Location Services

GPS is probably the single function that heats up an iDevice the most. Turn it off by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

Turn on Airplane mode

This turns off GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Cellular data. Go to the Control Centre and tap the plane icon.

Turn off iPhone when not in use

If you can manage without notifications, we’d suggest turning the iPhone off entirely when not in use. Hold down the power button and one of the volume buttons and drag the Power off slider.

Update your Apps

Sometimes, the new updates of an app are released to fix the bugs in that app, rather than adding new features. So, it’s very important to make sure thatyour apps are up to date as the software bugs in an app can cause your iPhone 12 Pro to overheat.

To check for the app updates, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Open App Store.
  2. Tap on the Today tab at the bottom of your screen.
  3. Click on the user profile present on the top-right corner of your screen. This will bring your account details.
  4. Scroll down to the section of the available updates.
  5. You can tap a particular app to update it or can even update all the apps at once by tapping on the Update All option.

Alternatively, here’s a faster way to update apps on your iPhone.

  1. Press and hold the App Store icon.
  2. A quick action menu will pop up. Choose Updates.
  3. Update a particular app or all of your apps at once.

Update your iPhone 12 Pro software

Updating iOS can help you fix the issues caused by certain apps, which will further help you cool down your iPhone 12 Pro. Follow the mentioned steps to check if any update is available for your iPhone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to general.
  3. Tap on the Software Update.
  4. If any update is available, tap download and install.

Network Connection

When you enter an area with poor network connectivity like slow Wi-Fi, your phone keeps searching for a signal. And, this can cause your iPhone 12 Pro to heat up. Therefore, whenever you enter such areas, put your iPhone on Airplane mode to prevent battery drain and unnecessary heat generation.

Reset Settings

If you’re still not able to cool down your iPhone 12 Pro, reset all the settings on your iPhone.

Follow these steps to reset your iPhone settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on the Reset option available at the bottom of your screen.
  4. Select Reset All Settings.
It will clear out your Wi-Fi passwords, reset your wallpaper, and restore other settings to their defaults. Don’t worry about the data on your iPhone, it won’t delete any of your files or data. Resetting your iPhone’s settings can help you fix issues with the misbehaving apps.

iPhone 12 Pro overheating: Problem fixed

All the advice about cooling off a hot iPhone 12 Pro applies to keeping it from overheating in the first place.

For example, you might find that watching long Netflix sessions makes your iPhone 12 Pro hot, so it’s a good idea to shorten your streaming video sessions. Likewise, avoid charging your iPhone while you are actively using it for intensive applications. And if you notice that your iPhone 12 Pro gets unusually warm while charging, you might want to remove it from the case when you charge it.

These precautions can usually keep your iPhone 12 Pro from getting too hot, but if you find that your iPhone is unusually susceptible to overheating, there might be a hardware issue that needs to be addressed. You should contact Apple support to see if your iPhone needs to be serviced.
