Why are my iPhone 14 Pro speakers not working?

There are a few reasons why your iPhone 14 Pro speakers might not be working. It could be something as simple as an incorrect setting. For example, the phone could be on mute without you realizing it, Bluetooth might be sending the sound somewhere else, audio output settings might be messing things up. There could also be a software glitch on your iPhone.

Physical issues can cause your iPhone 14 Pro speakers to fail, too. This could be because of water damage, dropping your iPhone too hard, or simply wearing your iPad speakers out over time.

Fortunately, if you’re facing speaker issues on your iPhone 14 Pro, you don’t have to make a Genius Bar appointment just yet. Here are a handful of troubleshooting steps and fixes you can try to revive your iPhone 14 Pro speakers.

Note: information in this article apply to iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

How to Fix a Non-Working iPhone 14 Pro Speaker

If your iPhone 14 Pro speaker isn’t working properly, follow these steps, in order, to troubleshoot the problem and get it working again.

1. Check the iPhone ringer and volume

On the left side of iPhone 14 Pro are three buttons: the ringer/mute switch and two volume buttons. The ringer/mute switch disables all sound for calls and notifications, while the volume buttons control the overall volume of the device.

To get your iPhone 14 Pro speakers working again, toggle the ringer switch. Do this by flipping it down (or towards the back of the phone) so that the orange underlay appears, then flip it back up. Also, raise the volume on the phone as high as it will go.

2. Check the sound settings

It could be that you turned off sounds related to certain functions of the phone, such as ringtones for incoming calls, notifications, or other functions. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and check the settings there.

Then, adjust any of the following: Adjust the volume slider, move the Change with Buttons toggle switch to on/green, set a new ringtone, or set a new text tone.

3. Check if the iPhone is stuck in headphone mode

The iPhone can only send audio output to one place at a time. Your iPhone speakers could be working fine but may be stuck in headphone mode. This is a bug that causes the iPhone to send audio to the headphones, even if the headphones aren’t plugged in.

The first thing you should try if your iPhone thinks headphones are plugged in is simple: plug in, then unplug, a pair of headphones. It’s possible the headphone jack on your iPhone didn’t recognize when you last unplugged your headphones and still thinks they’re connected.

Next, clean the lightening port. The best and safest way to remove lint or other debris from the port is with compressed air. Buy a can of it at most office supply or computer stores. Use the included straw and shoot a few bursts of air into the headphone port to blow out any debris. If you don’t have compressed air, or can’t get your hands on any, try a cotton swab or the plastic ink tube in a ballpoint pen.

4. Make Sure the Speaker Grills are Clean

Another thing you should do without fail if your iPhone 14 Pro speakers are not working is to ensure that smudge or tiny particles of gunk are not blocking the speaker grills. If you notice your iPhone 14 Pro speaker crackling, there’s a very good chance some dust particles have been trapped within the speaker grills. Believe it or not, dust does sneak into the ports and start creating problems.

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, you can scrub the speaker holes. Besides, canned air can also be handy in blowing debris out of the speaker’s nooks and crannies.

5. Disable Bluetooth

The iPhone 14 Pro speaker can’t play sounds if the audio is sent from the iPhone to another device. You may not hear anything because your iPhone is sending audio to a different speaker, such as a Bluetooth speaker.

If so, turning off Bluetooth breaks the connection to the speaker and plays audio through the iPhone speaker again. Here’s how to turn off Bluetooth:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Move the Bluetooth toggle switch to off/white.

6. Check the audio output settings

Your iPhone 14 Pro might be connected to an external speaker via AirPlay without you knowing. In this situation, switch the audio output settings away from the AirPlay speaker and back to the built-in iPhone speaker to receive sound from the iPhone speaker. Here’s how:

  1. Swipe down from the top right of the screen to open the Control Center.
  2. Select the AirPlay icon in the upper-right corner of the music playback control.
  3. Select iPhone if it is not already selected.

7. Restart your iPhone

Many problems can be solved by restarting your device. iPhone 14 Pro speakers not working can be the result of a simple, temporary technical glitch that can be cleared with a restart. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Side Button and Volume Up button for a few seconds.
  2. Swipe Slide To Power Off when it appears on the screen.
  3. After a few seconds, press and hold the Side Button to turn your iPhone back on.

8. Update the operating system

Updating the operating system can solve software problems. Software updates also fix bugs that may appear from time to time. It could be that your iPhone 14 Pro speaker isn’t working because of a bug present in the current version of iOS.

Like with a restart, this isn’t the most likely fix, but it has the potential to help. Plus, since updates are free and quick to install, it’s worth a try. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app of your iPhone 14 Pro.
  2. Navigate to General.
  3. Tap Software update.
  4. If an update is available, hit Download & Install.

9. Reset All Settings

Sometimes, the problem of iPhone 14 Pro speakers not working can arise out of a combination of different settings on your iPhone that may not be playing too well with each other. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to get your iPhone settings back on track without losing any of your data. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and tap General.
  2. Now, tap Transfer or Reset iPhone at the bottom of the screen and hit Reset.
  3. Next, tap Reset All Settings and confirm.

10. Water accident? Let it dry!

If resetting your iPhone settings didn’t help, you could have a different hardware problem. It’s possible the iPhone 14 Pro speakers have been damaged by water or other moisture getting inside.

In that case, stand your iPhone at about a 45 degree angle with the speakers facing down. Use a lint-free cloth to catch any drips; any other absorbent material, including cotton balls, could further damage your device. If you think there’s still water in any recesses, gently tap your iPhone with the charging port facing down. Consider placing it near a small fan to increase air circulation.

Despite what you might have heard, you shouldn’t seal your phone in a bag filled with rice. This can further corrode elements in your smartphone. However, you can try silica gel. You’ll often find packets of this in new pairs of shoes, because they soak up moisture.

11. Get tech support from Apple

If your iPhone 14 Pro speakers are not working after trying the above solutions, you need to consult the experts at Apple. They’ll be able to help you diagnose the cause of the problem and fix it through software or by taking your phone in for repair. You can either get support from Apple online or make a Genius Bar appointment for in-person support at your nearest Apple Store.
