iPad Pro microphone not working? Here’s how to fix it!

Last Updated: May 28, 2022 by Kevin Shaw

Is your iPad Pro microphone not working? If so, you might want to get that fixed as soon as possible. In this article, I’ll explain why your iPad Pro microphone is not working and show you how to fix the issue.

The microphone is one of the essential elements of your iPad Pro; FaceTime calls, video recordings, audio notes, Siri, and other various apps depend on it. And when your iPad Pro microphone isn’t working properly, almost every experience is crippled.

But why suffer when these quick and easy fixes can resolve the iPad Pro microphone not working issue in minutes.

Reasons Why Your iPad Pro Microphone Isn’t Working

There are many reasons the iPad Pro microphone may not be working. The problem may be Bluetooth or app-related, the iPadOS is out-of-date, or something is blocking or interfering with the microphone and preventing it from performing normally. Follow these troubleshooting steps to fix the microphone if it stopped working on your iPad Pro.

Ways to fix iPad Pro microphone not working

Here’s how to troubleshoot an iPad Pro microphone and get it working again.

1. Find Out What Microphone Isn’t Working

Before you begin fixing your iPad Pro microphone, you’ll need to know which microphone isn’t working.

When viewed in portrait orientation with the Home Button at the bottom of the screen, there are two microphones at the top of the iPad Pro. One is located at the centre of the top-edge; the second is located immediately behind – on the back of the iPad.

Testing microphones individually helps locate or rule out problems with any specific microphone.

Front microphone: Open the Camera app from the iPad home screen. Choose the Video option and tap the selfie view icon (camera). Tap the record icon to record your voice. Stop the recording and go to the Photos app to play the video. If you can hear your voice, the front microphone is working.
Back microphone: Open the Camera app from the iPad home screen. Go to the Video option and tap the record icon to record your voice. (It should be in regular view.) Stop the recording. Go to the Photos app to play the video. If you can hear your voice, the back microphone is working.
If you find that a microphone isn’t working, continue to the next steps.

If only one microphone isn’t working or sounds muffled, start with step one.

2. iPad Pro Microphone Muffled or Muted? Try Cleaning It

One of the simplest ways to fix your iPad Pro microphone problem is by cleaning it. If any of your microphones sound muffled when you speak, they might need a good cleaning. iPad Pro microphones are sensitive, and a small piece of dust or dander can affect how they sound.

To clean your microphone, avoid blowing into it at first, as you could push more dirt in there.

Instead, take a cue tip and dip it in some isopropyl alcohol. Don’t put too much on there, as you don’t need a lot. Then wipe it along the muffled microphone, either on the front, or back of your iPad Pro. Try to get inside the microphone hole if you can.

Isopropyl alcohol breaks up grime and dries fast, so it won’t damage your device. Try using the highest percentage of isopropyl alcohol you can find.

3. Make Sure You’re Not Connected to a Bluetooth Device

Being connected to a Bluetooth accessory could mean that your iPad is activating an external microphone and you can’t use the one built into the iPad itself.

This is a common issue with those who use Bluetooth headphones or smart home systems. You can check if you’re connected to a Bluetooth accessory by opening the Control Center, then toggle Bluetooth off. Alternatively, tap and hold it to view all your connected devices.

4. Unplug any accessories

Unplug all accessories (such as wireless keyboard, Mouse, and headphones) connected to the iPad and use the microphone again to see if it works.

5. Make Sure Apps Have Microphone Permission

If your iPad Pro microphone isn’t working in a specific app, you might not have granted that app permission to use your microphone.

To grant an app permission, head to Settings and go to your selected app. Open that app’s settings and make sure the Microphone option is enabled

6. Update iPadOS or Restore Your iPad to Default Settings

Sometimes an out-of-date iPadOS can interfere with the microphone working correctly, and updating the iPadOS can clear the problem. To check if iPadOS is up-to-date, go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the latest updates and install them.

Sometimes iOS updates have bugs that cause hardware issues. If the microphone on your iPad Pro stopped working correctly after an update, call Apple iPhone support or downgrade iPadOS.

If updating iPadOS on your iPad doesn’t resolve the issue, you might want to restore your device to the default settings. Sometimes, apps can customize settings which can cause your microphone not to work. Restoring your iPad will fix this.

To do this, head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings.

This will restore all the settings on your iPad without erasing your data.

If neither of these options worked, one other step you can take is to erase all the content on your iPad and set it up from scratch. While this is very time-consuming, it might be worth a try if all your iPad Pro microphones stopped working.

Make sure you back up your iPad first. Then, to erase everything, head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings.

7. Try Using an External Microphone

If you’ve tried all the above fixes but nothing is working, you can still use an external microphone with your iPad Pro. You can use this while you wait for a repair, or even use an external microphone indefinitely if you can’t afford a repair.

Apple’s earphones have a built-in microphone, and many other headphones have a microphone as well. While not ideal, headphones will connect through your headphone jack or over Bluetooth and don’t rely on your built-in microphones for many tasks.

8. Contact Apple support

If all else fails, reach out to Apple to make an appointment. If your iPhone is under warranty, Apple can troubleshoot the issue or replace the iPad. Alternatively, take the iPad in for service, either at no cost or for a fee, depending on your warranty.

iPad Pro Microphone Not Working? Problem fixed!

An iPad Pro microphone not working can be annoying, but there are solutions that can get you heard again in no time.

While these DIY repairs might not work for everyone, hopefully you have resolved your issues with the tutorials above. For those who haven’t, you have repair options and have the ability to use an external microphone in the meantime.

Either way, we hope you resolve your iPad Pro microphone not working issue as fast as possible.
