Gmail app not working on iPhone 13? Here’s the fix

Last Updated: July 19, 2022 by Moses Gitari

Gmail has been an online staple for a few decades now. You’re likely reading this because you’re one of the billions of people using their service. Unfortunately, you’re probably also here because Gmail is not working on your iPhone 13.

If you’re finding that Gmail app won’t load, you have issues sending and receiving emails on your iPhone 13, and notifications aren’t appearing, you’re likely also losing hours trying to get everything to work.

As iPhone troubleshooting experts, we’ve got a number of tips to help you get your Gmail working. In this article, i’ll explain why Gmail app is not working on your iPhone 13 and show you how to fix the problem for good.

How to fix Gmail not working on iPhone 13

Is Gmail down?

If your Gmail isn’t sending or receiving emails, you can check whether the source of the problem is on Google’s side.

You can head over to the Google Workspace Status Dashboard to see if there is a Gmail outage, suspected outage, or a credible report of a problem with the service. Alternatively, you can try a website like DownDetector. The site collects user reports to identify service outages. There’s even a map to see if the issue is local.

Close and reopen Gmail app on iPhone 13

This is a simple, yet very functional troubleshooting tip that works most of the time. If you find Gmail app crashing or not working on iPhone 13, simply closing and reopening the app might fix any local issues.

  1. From the Home Screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle of the screen.
  2. Swipe right or left to find the Gmail app.
  3. Swipe up on the Gmail app to close it.

Check for updates

Having an older version of an app isn’t usually a problem, but it can sometimes create some conflicts. This is especially the case when newer updates are more extensive, or when they include server-side changes. If you find Gmail app crashing on iPhone 13, it won’t hurt to check the App Store and see if there are any updates available for Gmail.

How to check for Gmail app updates:

  1. Launch the App Store.
  2. Search for “Gmail.”
  3. You’ll see an Update button if there is an available update for Gmail. Otherwise, the button will say Open.

While you’re at it, you might want to check if there’s an update available for your iPhone.

How to check for iOS updates:

  1. Go into the Settings app.
  2. Select General.
  3. Hit software update.
  4. If an update is available, tap on Download & Install.
  5. Follow instructions and let the update run.

Once your iPhone 13 boots up, try using Gmail again.

Restart your iPhone

This is possibly the easiest solution that you can try. It has worked out for me on countless occasions, and it may work for you as well. Just Restart your iPhone and try using Gmail again. To do this, press and hold the side and either of the volume buttons, drag the power off slider, and let the iPhone do its thing. When it reboots, try using Gmail again.

Check your internet connection

Is Gmail even the problem? It just might be your internet that’s letting you down. Try testing other apps or websites to see if they work. You can do something as simple as launching Google and searching for anything. If this works, it means your internet is OK. Are other devices working? Check if you have any. If nothing else works, you might be off the grid.

Start by checking if Airplane Mode is on. Those using Wi-Fi or LAN should take a look at the router and see if it’s connected. Try restarting it. There’s usually a dedicated button, but you can also unplug the router and plug it back in.

If you’re using cellular data, you might want to see if your data connection is on:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go into Cellular.
  3. Toggle Cellular data on, if it isn’t.

Remove your Google account and re-add it

You can give your Gmail app a complete account restart, too. The simplest way to do this is to remove your Google account and re-add it afterward. This might create some inconveniences, as your Google account might be running multiple services on your phone, but it’s worth a try if none of the other methods are working.

How to remove a Google account from iPhone 13

  1. On your iPhone 13, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top right, tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Manage accounts on this device.
  4. Tap Remove from this device.

Add your account to the Gmail app on iPhone 13

  1. On your iPhone 13, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Add another account.
  4. To add your account, follow the on-screen steps.

Uninstall and reinstall Gmail app

if you find Gmail not working on iPhone 13 after trying the above steps, uninstall the Gmail app entirely and then reinstall it from the app store. Here’s how to uninstall the Gmail app from your iPhone 13.

  1. Press and hold the Gmail app.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. In the pop-up window, tap Delete App > tap Delete.
  4. Now, install a fresh version from App Store.
