Last Updated: November 1, 2022 by Moses Gitari

The Digital Crown on your Apple Watch Series 8 is not working and you don’t know what to do. Digital Crown is perhaps the most important button on an Apple Watch. In this article, I’ll explain why your Apple Watch series 8 digital crown is not working and show you how to fix the problem for good.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Digital Crown is the rotating button on the side of Apple Watch. You can press and hold the Digital Crown to use Siri, turn it to scroll or zoom, press it to view the Watch face or Home Screen, and double-press to open the last used app. Sometimes, however, your Apple Watch Series 8 digital crown may sometimes stop working. Although you may be able to scroll smoothly, the Digital Crown won’t respond to other actions. Tapping on an app does nothing.

Why is my Apple Watch series 8 digital crown not working

  • Outdated software.
  • Software bug
  • Dirt and debris in Digital Crown
  • Hardware damage.

how to fix Apple Watch series 8 digital crown not working issue

1. Update watch and iPhone

Ensure both your watch and iPhone are running the latest software versions. Many users confirmed the crown started responding again after updating their devices. Updates on both the watch itself and the iPhone it is paired with. To do this, you will need to go to the settings of both the Apple Watch and iPhone.

Let’s start with the Apple Watch. This may be tricky to do if the Digital Crown isn’t working, but don’t worry because we found a way around that!

  1. Say “Hey Siri” to activate Siri and then say, “Open Settings.”
  2. Once Siri has opened settings, tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.

From here, you can determine if the watch is up to date.
Now to check your iPhone for updates:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.

From here, you can determine if the iPhone is up to date.

2. Restart watch and iPhone

If updating your devices didn’t seem to help the issue, turning both devices on and off again is always a good thing to try. To turn off your Apple Watch:

Press and hold the Side button on the watch.
Swipe Power Off.
Then to turn it back on, press and hold the Side button again until the Apple Logo appears.

To restart your iPhone, go to Settings, select General, and then tap Shut Down.

3. Clean the Digital Crown on your watch

If you are still experiencing the problem of Apple Watch series 8 digital crown not working, you may need to clean your Watch near the Digital Crown, as dirt or debris may be causing the problem. Luckily, the Apple Watch Series 8 is water-resistant. To clean your Apple Watch, hold the watch under running water near the Digital Crown, trying to clean the area between the dial and the watch face. Water should remove most unwanted substances like lotion or dust. Dry with a lint-free cloth.

If your Digital Crown starts working again and you want to remove excess water, you can use the Water Lock feature.

  1. First, swipe up on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the Water Drop button.
  3. Then, turn the dial on the Digital Crown to expel any water. You will hear a vibrating noise and may feel some water as it is removed from the watch.

4. Unpair your Apple Watch and pair again

Another tip that may fix an unresponsive Digital Crown is unpairing your Apple Watch from your iPhone and then re-pairing again. To do this, make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are close together.

  1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch in the bottom left corner.
  3. Tap All Watches in the top-left corner.
  4. Tap the yellow info button next to the watch you want to unpair.
  5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.

After this, you may want to restart your iPhone and Apple Watch. Then, re-pair your watch to your phone, and make sure the two devices are close together. Then, follow the on-screen instructions and be sure to select Restore from Backup to reload all of your settings and customizations.

5. Get the Digital Crown repaired

Unfortunately, if your Apple Watch Series 8 Digital Crown is not working after trying the above steps, you’re probably going to have to get it repaired at some point. Unless you work or have worked at an Apple Store, we don’t recommend trying to fix your Apple Watch on your own.

The components of your Apple Watch are very small — without a special toolkit, it’s nearly impossible to fix your broken Apple Watch Series 8 Digital Crown on your own. Additionally, if you make a mistake while trying to repair your Apple Watch, you run the risk of voiding your warranty.

We recommend taking it into your local Apple Store or shipping it in using Apple’s mail-in repair service. If you do take it into your local Apple Store, be sure to make a Genius Bar appointment first!
