You can press and hold the Digital Crown to use Siri, turn it to scroll or zoom, press it to view the Watch face or Home Screen, and double-press to open the last used app. Sometimes, however, your Apple Watch Series 8 digital crown may sometimes stop working. Although you may be able to scroll smoothly, the Digital Crown won’t respond to other actions. Tapping on an app does nothing.

1. Update watch and iPhone
Ensure both your watch and iPhone are running the latest software versions. Many users confirmed the crown started responding again after updating their devices. Let’s start with the Apple Watch. This may be tricky to do if the Digital Crown isn’t working, but don’t worry because we found a way around that!
- Say “Hey Siri” to activate Siri and then say, “Open Settings.”
- Once Siri has opened settings, tap General.
- Tap Software Update.

2. Restart watch and iPhone

Press and hold the Side button on the watch.
Swipe Power Off.

To restart your iPhone, go to Settings, select General, and then tap Shut Down.
3. Clean the Digital Crown on your watch
If you are still experiencing the problem of Apple Watch series 8 digital crown not working, you may need to clean your Watch near the Digital Crown, as dirt or debris may be causing the problem. Luckily, the Apple Watch Series 8 is water-resistant. To clean your Apple Watch, hold the watch under running water near the Digital Crown, trying to clean the area between the dial and the watch face. Water should remove most unwanted substances like lotion or dust. Dry with a lint-free cloth.
If your Digital Crown starts working again and you want to remove excess water, you can use the Water Lock feature.
- First, swipe up on your Apple Watch.
- Tap the Water Drop button.
- Then, turn the dial on the Digital Crown to expel any water. You will hear a vibrating noise and may feel some water as it is removed from the watch.

Unfortunately, if your Apple Watch Series 8 Digital Crown is not working after trying the above steps, you’re probably going to have to get it repaired at some point. Unless you work or have worked at an Apple Store, we don’t recommend trying to fix your Apple Watch on your own.
The components of your Apple Watch are very small — without a special toolkit, it’s nearly impossible to fix your broken Apple Watch Series 8 Digital Crown on your own. Additionally, if you make a mistake while trying to repair your Apple Watch, you run the risk of voiding your warranty.
