Why Is My iPhone SE 3 Wireless Charging Not Working?

If your iPhone SE 3 won’t wirelessly charge, it could be a software or hardware problem or something entirely different. The most common reason people find their iPhone SE 2022 won’t wirelessly charge is an obstruction preventing the charger from connecting with the phone. It’s also possible there is a software issue, and once that’s cleared out, the phone will begin charging again.

The problem with your iPhone could be a defect, in which case, you’ll likely need to return the phone to Apple for a replacement or take it to a repair shop for a professional fix.

Finally, it’s possible that your wireless charger is broken. If you just purchased it, try reaching out to the customer support of the company you purchased it from to see if you can get a free replacement.

How to fix wireless charging not working on iPhone SE 2022

If you’ve determined that your iPhone SE 2022 won’t charge wirelessly, walking through these troubleshooting steps might help.

After trying each of these steps, put your iPhone SE 3 back on the wireless charger and then give it a few minutes to see if it begins charging. If your phone is completely dead, it could take a little time to build up enough power to show the charging icon on the screen.

1. Make sure your wireless charger is plugged in

Make sure you’re using a high-quality, Qi-enabled accessory — and make sure it’s plugged in.
This may sound like a “no duh” suggestion, but it’s something to check before proceeding to any other steps. Make sure that your Qi wireless charger is plugged into an outlet or power strip that’s working.

If there is a charging port between the power cable and the charging mat, try cleaning out the charging port with a Q-tip and see if the charging mat works better.

2. Be mindful of iPhone placement on the wireless charger

How you place your iPhone on a wireless charger is, arguably, the most important thing you’ll want to keep in mind when using Qi-based solutions.

To put it in layman’s terms, Qi uses a charging coil to wirelessly transfer energy to your device. But these coils can be finicky. If your device isn’t properly aligned with the charging pad’s coils, then you could run into problems.

If the iPhone is too far away from the charging coil, then charging speeds may end up being ridiculously slow. Similarly, if the coil and iPhone aren’t aligned properly, charging may not take place at all. Worse still, you may even get a charging ”ping” or see the charging indicator working normally — even if the device isn’t charging. More likely than not, this is why many users wake up to half-charged devices.

One simple solution to this problem is to pick your iPhone up and reposition it. Make sure your iPhone is directly on the center of the charging pad.

3. Reboot/force-restart your iPhone

When in doubt, restart your iPhone.
In many cases, glitchy or buggy behavior can be easily rectified by a simple restart. That’s the case for the iPhone’s wireless charging feature, too. If you’re running into problems wirelessly charging your iPhone SE 3, you may want to power down your iPhone or perform a force restart.

4. Wipe the back of your iPhone and charging pad

If wireless charging is not working on your iPhone SE 3 after trying the above solutions, try to wipe off the charging pad and the back of your iPhone. A layer of dust or other debris could be causing the charging issue.

5. Charging pad might be incompatible or defective

Make sure your wireless charger is a Qi-enabled accessory from a reputable brand. Wireless chargers that don’t support Qi, or shoddy options from sketchy companies, may not work with your iPhone SE 3.

To rule out compatibility issue, try charging another device that supports wireless charging on your charging pad. If it works with the test device, you might be dealing with a compatibility issue after all.

But if it doesn’t charge the test device, the wireless charging pad might be broken. If you just purchased it, try reaching out to the customer support of the company you purchased it from to see if you can get a free replacement.

6. Try another power adapter/charging cable

Besides an incompatible or broken wireless charging pad, the power adapter might use some changing to be sure it’s not the culprit. One way to test your power adapter and power cable is to pair them with another device to see if it charges; this might be a phone or an AirPod.

If the cable or power adapter doesn’t work after pairing with another device, they might be defective. Try other cables or adapters to see if they work.

7. Take off any cases from your iPhone

In theory, only metal cases will interfere with Qi-based wireless charging. But in practice, sometimes thicker plastic cases can cause problems, too.

Particularly thick iPhone cases, like LifeProof or Otterbox, can inhibit wireless charging because of the distance they create between an iPhone and a charging coil. That may lead to slower charging speeds or wireless charging that doesn’t work at all.

More than that, some cases can inhibit an iPhone’s ability to stay cool while charging. Heat isn’t the best thing for electronics — and if your iPhone SE 2022 is overheating while charging, it could reduce your battery’s lifespan.

Most cases will work fine with wireless charging, but if you’re still having trouble, try taking the case off. Just make sure that your phone is charging in a safe location in case it gets knocked off the pad.

8. Update your iOS version

Apple routinely patches software bugs that could inhibit wireless charging. Even if you aren’t actively experiencing charging issues, you’ll want to install the latest available software whenever you can.

9. Factory reset your iPhone

If you find your iPhone SE 3 completely unresponsive when you place it on the wireless charging pad, you may need to try the factory data reset method. The method will restore all the iPhone’s settings to their original form and clears every data of your iPhone. So, we urge you to backup your iPhone before performing this step. This method can temporarily fix the wireless charging not working on iPhone SE 2022 problem.

Here’s how to hard reset iPhone:

  1. Head to Settings.
  2. Next, tap on General.
  3. Now, tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Now, tap on Erase All Content & Settings.

Now check if your iPhone SE 2022 is charging wirelessly. If it doesn’t, then you might need to put your iPhone in DFU mode.

10. Put iPhone in DFU mode

If wireless charging issues persist and you suspect it could still be a software bug, then you may want to perform a DFU Restore. This is one of the deepest “resets” you can carry out on an iPhone.

11. Contact Apple Support and charging pad’s manufacturer

If you’re still running into problems with wireless charging on your iPhone SE 3, there may be a damaged component or hardware issue with your device. Try a different wireless charger unit to see if it works; otherwise, we recommend taking your iPhone to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider so they can diagnose and fix the problem.

Want to learn how best to contact Apple Support? Here’s a step-by-step guide. Additionally, you could also approach the charging pad’s manufacturer to clear out the problem.
