It’s one of those things you feel right away: your iPhone 14 Pro overheating. We hold our iPhones in our hands so much that we’ve become very familiar with their “normal” or healthy temperature. Even though that temperature varies based on season and climate, you know when your iPhone 14 Pro is hot. In this article, I’ll explain why your iPhone 14 Pro is getting so hot and show you exactly how to fix the problem.
Note: information in this article apply to iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Before we take a look at the methods to fix the iPhone 14 overheating issue, let’s first dig into the problem and reveal what could be the cause!
Why Is My iPhone 14 Pro Overheating?
- Keeping your phone at high brightness
- Charging and using your phone at the same time
- Leaving your phone in a car too long when it’s too hot outside
- Leaving your phone in direct sunlight for too long
- Using processor intensive features for too long, such as a graphics-intensive game or GPS
- Setting up your phone for the first time or restoring it from a backup
- Buggy Apps
- Defective charging accessory
Based on the above information, the iPhone 14 Pro overheating issue is due to software or hardware. Luckily, if there’s a software issue, then you can try and take a few different paths to get your iPhone back in working order. Some are pretty simple, but others can be frustrating, especially if you’ve had your iPhone since launch. As for hardware, well, that’s another story and we’ll touch on that below.
How To Diagnose And Fix An iPhone 14 Pro That Gets Hot
If your iPhone 14 Pro gets excessively hot, you should make an effort to cool it off immediately. Here are some standard precautions and troubleshooting steps you can take:
1. Take off the case
Some phone cases are more likely to trap heat than others. So if your iPhone 14 Pro is extremely hot, remove the case so the heat can more easily radiate away.
2. Make Sure You are Using MFi Certified Chargers
There are all sorts of reasons why you must always use MFi (stands for Made for iPhone, iPad, and iPod) certified chargers. First and foremost, certified chargers are fully compatible. Hence, they can charge your iPhone faster and with the needed efficiency. And second, the authorized chargers are better equipped to deal with threats like overheating, overcurrent, and short-circuiting.
On the contrary, fake or uncertified chargers deliver slow charging and are more prone to issues like overheating and short-circuiting. Not to mention, they are also the main culprits behind the “Accessory may not be supported” error. So, always stay away from uncertified chargers.
3. Restart your iPhone 14 Pro to fix overheating problem
Restarting your iPhone 14 Pro will clear the short-term memory and might help in reducing the accumulated heat. So, If you want to simply restart your iPhone 14 Pro to let it breathe, simply follow the steps below to do so:
- Press and hold either volume button and the side button to bring up the Power Slider.
- Drag the slider from left to right to turn off your iPhone and then wait for a bit.
- To turn it back on, press and hold the side button on your iPhone.
Your iPhone has now been restarted and should functioning normally soon.
4. Hard Reset Your iPhone 14 Pro to Fix Overheating Issue
Whenever I come across a common/miscellaneous iOS issue, I make sure to try out a hard reset on my iPhone. More often than not, it helps me troubleshoot the issue. Considering how reliable this method is, I suggest you give it a shot to fix the iPhone 14 Pro overheating issue.
- Quickly press and release the volume up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume down button.
- Next, hold down the side button until the Apple logo shows up.
- Release the Side button.
Once your iPhone 14 Pro has rebooted, try using it for some time to check if you have got the better of the overheating issue.
5. Stop performing processor-intensive tasks
Besides being the most likely reason for your iPhone 14 Pro overheating, running power intensive applications or games open on your device uses more resources and puts a strain on the device. If your iPhone 14 Pro is overheating, you should close your streaming video apps and stop playing mobile games. These apps drain the battery unnecessarily that often lead to overheating issue. For example, if your iPhone 14 Pro got noticeably hot while watching Netflix, stop the streaming app to take the load off the processor.
Swipe up from the bottom part of the screen to bring up the app switcher. After that, swipe up on an app card to quit the app.
6. Stop charging your iPhone while you perform processor-intensive tasks
Charging your phone heats the battery. Playing games heats up the CPU and other components. Combining the two can lead to an unexpectedly hot iPhone 14 Pro.
7. Turn off Location Services
GPS is probably the single function that causes iPhone 14 Pro to overheat the most. Turn it off by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
8. Turn on Airplane mode
This turns off GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Cellular data. Go to the Control Centre and tap the plane icon.
9. Update Software
If your iPhone 14 Pro is still overheating and none of the solutions mentioned above work in resolving this problem, the issue might be due to a software bug. Apple releases software updates quite frequently to fix bugs and also enhancing the overall performance. So, there is a high chance that the software update may help fix the iPhone 14 Pro overheating problem.
Start the Settings app on your iPhone > General > Software Update. Now, iOS will check if there is any software update available. If the update is available, download and install it to resolve the iPhone 14 Pro overheating problem.
10. Disable Background App Refresh
Though background app refresh may not seem to have a direct impact on the iPhone 14 Pro overheating issue, it does trigger the problem behind the scene. The continuous background app refresh kills more battery. And when the battery is forced to do the heavy lifting due to excessive power consumption, overheating issue crops up.
Go to the Settings app on your iPhone > General > Background App Refresh. Now, you can either completely turn off background app refresh on your iOS device or allow only a few important apps to refresh in the background. I would suggest you turn it off right now. If that resolves the iPhone 14 Pro overheating issue, you can allow some important apps to refresh in the background later.
11. Lower your screen brightness
Just the same as running background apps, turning your brightness up will force your battery to work harder and cause your iPhone 14 Pro to overheat. Instead, look for an anti-glare cover for your device. This low cost solution can help you see your screen in the sun.
12. Update apps
The new updates often come with bug fixes, aiming to enhance the efficiency of that particular app. This means they are more likely to cause any trouble. So keep your apps updated to the latest version.
To update apps: Launch the App Store and then navigate to Today > Your Profile > Update All.
13. Uninstall Unnecessary Apps
Having dormant applications on your iPhone not only takes up excess storage but leaves lesser resources for everything else. This limits your device’s capabilities for no reason. You can safely remove any apps or games that you feel are lying dormant. Follow the steps below to do so:
- Start the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Go to General.
- Select iPhone storage from the given list.
- Tap the app you want to remove once and a menu will open up.
- Tap Delete App to completely remove the app from your iPhone. You can also just tap Offload App to simply remove all its cached data. However, this won’t remove the app itself.
Alternatively, you can tap and hold an App’s icon on the Home Screen and press Delete App to remove it from your iPhone.
14. Turn off Always On Display
Always On Display is one of the biggest features on iPhone 14 Pro. When enabled, it shows you the date, time, and your lock screen widgets on the dark screen even after you lock your device using the Side button. As useful as that may be, for some users, the Always On Displays has proved to be troublesome as it makes their iPhone 14 Pro overheat. Some users have reported that their phone started cooling down when they turned off the Always On Display feature.
To disable Always On Display, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn off the toggle next to Always On . This should prevent your iPhone 14 Pro from heating up and will also save its battery from draining faster.
15. iPhone 14 Pro is Still Overheating. What Do I Do?
If your iPhone 14 Pro is still overheating after following all of the steps above, there’s a chance that your phone’s internal circuitry is the problem. In that particular case, we recommend making an appointment with the Genius Bar to let Apple investigate your device. If you don’t have an Apple store nearby, you can also contact Apple support for help and instructions.
