If you can’t remember your Windows password and can’t log in, here’s what to do.

A password is still the most popular way to secure a PC. Since these devices are often crucial in our daily lives, forgetting a password can be extremely inconvenient. Fortunately, solutions exist. Forgot your PC login password or even the admin password? Keep reading to find out how to retrieve them.

I think it’s safe to say we’ve all forgotten a password at some point. For online accounts, you can just click a few links, enter your email address and then reset your password. But what happens when you forget the password to log into your Windows PC? After trying, then retrying the password you thought was correct, it’s only natural to want to panic. Don’t. Instead, take a deep breath. You’re not permanently locked out. Microsoft knows that a forgotten password can be a personal hell, especially if you’re working on a deadline.

If you lost or forgot laptop password, there are ways to retrieve it. You can achieve this whether you are running Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If you’ve lost or forgot laptop password there are a number of options you can try to access your computer. But with so many Windows operating systems now in use, methods to gain access to your computer can vary. That said, here are two methods that you can try.

First, though, just double-check that you haven’t accidentally pressed the Caps Lock key. You may be typing the right password, but upper-case and lower-case letters will be swapped over. Since passwords are case-sensitive, it won’t be recognised. Similarly, on a laptop, ensure you don’t have Num Lock enabled, which could mean you’re typing numbers instead of letters.

Accessing the computer as ‘administrator’

On Windows, there is a hidden account named Administrator. Most of the time, this account has no password set. That means that you can start your computer with this account, open the Control Panel to delete or change the password of any users and fix your problem.

You can do this in a few simple steps:

Step 1: Boot your computer and immediately press on the F8 key several times until the boot menu appears.

Step 2: Select Safe Mode using the arro keys and hit Enter.

Step 3: Click on the Start menu located at the bottom left corner, head to the Control Panel, then in User Accounts you can change any user passwords easily.

The above method may or may not work depending on which operating system you are running.
